The Canton Fair and Yiwu Market are often mentioned in the same breath by overseas buyers, and for good reason — many trips are planned around visiting both. They serve different purposes, though, and understanding the difference helps in planning an efficient sourcing trip.
The Canton Fair: a twice-yearly trade show
Held in Guangzhou each spring and autumn, the Canton Fair is a large, time-limited trade exhibition where thousands of manufacturers showcase products across dozens of categories under one roof. It’s a useful way to compare many suppliers quickly, see new product lines, and make initial contact — but it only runs for a set window each year.
Yiwu Market: open year-round
Yiwu International Trade City, by contrast, operates year-round as a permanent wholesale market. There’s no show schedule to work around, and vendors are generally used to smaller, immediate orders rather than the larger production runs typical of fair exhibitors.
Why buyers combine the two
A common pattern: buyers attend the Canton Fair to source larger manufactured items or make new supplier contacts, then travel on to Yiwu (roughly a few hours away) to fill out an order with smaller commodities, packaging materials, or accessories that don’t need a factory-scale minimum order. Combining both trips into one visit to China is generally more efficient than two separate ones.
Planning the logistics
Because the Canton Fair only runs during specific weeks, timing a Yiwu visit around it takes some planning — but the two cities are well connected, and goods sourced from both locations can usually be consolidated into a single shipment from one of the two cities rather than exported separately.
