FCL vs LCL: Container Shipping Options for Small and Growing Businesses

When it’s time to ship your order, one of the first decisions is whether to book a full container (FCL) or share container space with other shipments (LCL). The right choice depends mostly on how much you’re shipping — here’s how the two compare.

FCL: Full Container Load

With FCL, your goods fill an entire container — typically a 20-foot or 40-foot unit — that’s sealed and shipped exclusively for your order. Because you’re not sharing space, FCL generally means faster transit (no waiting for other cargo to consolidate) and lower risk of damage from handling, since the container isn’t opened and repacked along the way.

LCL: Less than Container Load

LCL is for shipments that don’t need a whole container. Your goods are consolidated with other buyers’ shipments inside a shared container, then separated again at the destination. This makes it possible to ship smaller quantities cost-effectively, without paying for container space you don’t need.

Which one makes sense for you?

As a rough guide, once an order is large enough to reasonably fill 60–70% of a 20-foot container, FCL usually becomes more cost-effective per unit, along with being faster and simpler to track. Below that volume, LCL is typically the more economical choice, even though transit times can run a little longer due to consolidation and deconsolidation at both ends.

Mixing multiple product categories

One advantage of sourcing several product categories through one consolidation point is that goods from different suppliers can be combined into a single container — whether that ends up being FCL or LCL — instead of each category shipping separately. This is usually more cost-effective than running multiple smaller shipments.

If you’re not sure which option fits your order, ask for a cost comparison under both — most freight forwarders or sourcing agents can quote both FCL and LCL side by side so you can see the trade-off in price versus speed for your specific volume.
